What is GAPS?
GAPS stands for Gut and Psychology /Physiology Syndrome. There are many things that can cause our gut flora to become compromised. Stress, trauma, antibiotic RX, antibiotics and chemicals in our food, and the list goes on. The gut flora plays a crucial role in the body's everyday functions. These colonies of beneficial microbes actually maintain the health of the entire absorptive surface of the gut lining. And so, when it gets weakened or damaged, our physical and mental health can suffer in many kinds of ways, and chronic illness can surface. The GAPS DIET is a science-based food approach to healing by going straight to the root cause and healing and sealing the gut wall and restoring and repopulating the gut flora using carefully selected nourishing, gut-building foods.
Who is GAPS for?
GAPS is for anyone looking to improve their bodily and mental health! Mental symptoms would include "learning disabilities and mental illnesses, such as autism, ADHD/ADD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, addictions, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, epilepsy, eating disorders and many other conditions, as well as other sympotms which don't fit under a straightforward label such as mood alterations, memory and cognitive problems, behavioural and social problems, panic attacks, anxiety, involuntary movements, tics and fits, sensory problems, etc. When the brain is in trouble it can produce any mixture of symptoms. Gut And Psychology Syndrome addresses the root of all of these symptoms and diseases."
"Gut And Physiology Syndrome or GAPS includes chronic physical conditions, which stem from an unhealthy gut, such as all autoimmune conditions (celiac disease, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes type one, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, systemic lupus erythematosus, osteoarthritis, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, autoimmune skin problems, Hashimoto disease and other hormonal problems, etc.), asthma, eczema, various allergies, food allergy and intolerance, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, myalgic encephalomyelitis, multiple chemical sensitivity, arthritis, menstrual problems, many endocrine disorders (thyroid, adrenal and other), chronic infections, many neurological diseases and all chronic digestive disorders (such as irritable bowel syndrome, gastritis, colitis, oesophagitis, etc). Many conditions do not fit into any diagnostic box and can present as a mixture of symptoms: digestive problems, fatigue, muscular weakness, cramps and abnormal muscle tone, pains and aches in joints and muscles, skin problems, hormonal abnormalities, neurological problems, allergies, etc."
The GAPS approach is novel in today's world but it is an age-old approach to healing. Because it targets the root cause of diseases and is a drug-free approach, GAPS can apply to everyone.
